Cách Sử Dụng Quantifiers: Some, Any, No; Much, Many, A Lot Of
Trong luyện thi IELTS, việc hiểu và sử dụng phù hợp lượng từ (quantifiers) như some, any, no; much, many, a lot of là rất quan trọng để nâng cao kỹ năng viết của bạn. Sử dụng chính xác các quantifiers này không chỉ giúp bạn diễn đạt ý kiến một cách chính xác mà còn thể hiện khả năng sử dụng tiếng Anh linh hoạt và tự tin.
Quantifiers "some" và "any" được sử dụng để chỉ số lượng không chính xác hoặc không biết chính xác. "Some" được sử dụng trong câu khẳng định khi ta muốn diễn tả một số lượng nhất định, trong khi "any" được sử dụng trong câu phủ định hoặc câu hỏi khi ta muốn diễn tả ý kiến rằng không có sự giới hạn hay quyết định cụ thể.

1. Ta sử dụng some và any trước danh từ số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được khi không cần đưa ra con số hoặc số lượng chính xác:
There were some pens on the desk but there wasn’t any paper.
Ta có thể sử dụng chúng không kèm theo danh từ khi nghĩa rõ rệt:
Hannah needed some paper but she couldn’t find any. (any = any paper)
2. Ta sử dụng some trong câu khẳng định:
I bought some cola and Tim bought some sandwiches.
Ta sử dụng any trong câu phủ định với các từ như never hoặc without, mang nghĩa phủ định:
I never have any clean socks!
I managed to use the washing machine without any problems.
3. Ta sử dụng any trong câu hỏi khi ta không mong đợi gì ở câu trả lời:
Have you got any brothers or sisters?
Do you have any photos of your dog?
Tuy nhiên, ta sử dụng some trong câu hỏi khi mong đợi câu trả lời ‘yes’:
Would you like some more cake?
Could I have some tea, please?
4. Ta có thể sử dụng no thay cho not . . . any với danh từ số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được. No mang nghĩa mạnh hơn not . . . any và thường được sử dụng trong tình huống trang trọng hơn:
I don’t have any time to speak to you now.
I have no time to speak to you now.
Ta phải sử dụng no với danh từ, nhưng sử dụng none một mình khi diễn đạt cùng một ý nghĩa như thế:
I want to buy a ticket for the concert, but there were none left.
(none = no tickets)
Ta có thể sử dụng some, any và none + of:
some of the boys; any of the people; none of the teachers
6. Ta thường sử dụng a lot of trong câu khẳng định; much và many trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi:
Sarah has a lot of books at home.
Have you read many books in French?
Harry doesn’t have much time to read.
7. Ta có thể sử dụng (a) few thay cho not many và (a) little thay cho not much:
I’ve eaten a few strawberries with a little cream.
8. Ta có thể sử dụng a lot of, much, many, (a) few và (a) little không kèm theo danh từ khi nghĩa rõ rệt:
I didn’t eat much at lunchtime, so I was hungry when we arrived!
(much = much food)
Were there many people? (many = many people)
~ No, not many, just a few. (a few = a few people)
Thực hành văn phạm
1. Ta sử dụng some, any, none, v.v. khi nói về số lượng vật mà ta không biết chính xác. Tình huống khi ta quyết định mua gì tại cửa hàng:
Do we need any tomatoes? ~ There are a few left, but perhaps we should get some more. And there isn’t much cheese, so we should buy some for the pizzas.
2. Ta sử dụng some trong câu hỏi khi đưa ra đề nghị hoặc yêu cầu:
Can I have some extra time to finish my homework?
~ Would you like some help with the last exercise?
3. Ta sử dụng no trong các tín hiệu trang trọng khi một điều gì đó phạm luật:
No pets allowed in the restaurant.
4. Ta sử dụng any và no để hình thành câu ngắn trong chuyện trò hàng ngày:
Any news?
~ Sorry, no time to stop and chat now!
5. Ta sử dụng a few và a little (không sử dụng few và little) khi muốn khẳng định thêm về số lượng ta đang diễn đạt. Tình huống ta chuyện trò về cuộc sống đang phát triển:
My parents had a little money saved so they were able to buy us a few presents on our birthdays. (nhấn mạnh khẳng định về số tiền họ để dành được)
So sánh:
My parents had a little money saved so they bought us few presents and we couldn’t afford to go on holiday. (nhấn mạnh phủ định hơn về số tiền ít ỏi.)
