Linking words (từ nối) là một phần quan trọng trong việc xây dựng câu và văn bản chính xác và có mạch lạc. Cách Sử Dụng Linking Word

"Either . . . or, neither . . . nor, both . . . and, because, for"

1. Ta sử dụng either . . . or để nói về sự lựa chọn giữa hai khả năng:

You can pay either when you order the books or when they are delivered.

2. Ta sử dụng neither . . . nor (= not one and not the other: không cái này cũng không cái kia) khi ta muốn cho biết câu phủ định là thật giữa hai người hoặc hai vật:

Neither the managers nor the workers have changed their opinion.

3. Ta sử dụng both . . . and để nhấn mạnh rằng hai ý tưởng hoặc hai vật cùng đi với nhau:

Sally is both the club secretary and the team captain.

The price includes both transport and the entrance ticket.

4. Ta sử dụng because để giải thích nguyên cớ hoặc lý do cho một điều gì đó:

Why were you late? ~ Because there was a traffic jam.

Sally went to bed because she was exhausted.

Khi có một danh từ diễn đạt lý do, ta sử dụng because of:

Why were you late? ~ Because of a traffic jam.

5. Ta có thể sử dụng for + noun để nói về lý do vì sao ta làm điều gì đó và for + động từ dạng -ing để giải thích mục đích của một điều gì đó:

Sean went to the shops for a newspaper.

What is it for? ~ it’s for slicing cheese.

1. Ta có thể sử dụng either . . . or khi có hai ý kiến và ta cần chọn lựa. Tình huống ta đang chọn kỳ nghỉ:

I’d like to stay either at The Regal or at The Pacific.

~ The Pacific is very popular – a wonderful choice.

~ Does the hotel have double beds?

~ You can have either a double bed or single bed.

2. Ta sử dụng neither . . . nor để giải thích rằng cả hai chọn lựa đều không chọn được:

I’m afraid that neither the library nor the swimming pool are open at the moment.

Lưu ý: Ta sử dụng động từ khẳng định với neither . . . nor.

Neither the supermarket nor the baker’s have any cakes left.

3. Ta sử dụng both . . . and khi ta muốn nói rằng hai vật đều cần thiết, hoặc muốn nhấn mạnh rằng hai vật đều bao gồm trong bảng giá hoặc quà tặng:

My son needs both his maths books and his football things today.

The price includes both lunch and dinner.

4. Ta có thể sử dụng because để giải thích vì sao người nào đó hai vật nào đó không ở đúng chỗ họ phải ở, đặc biệt trong câu hỏi có chữ why:

Why aren’t Jack and Julie here today? ~ Because he’s at a conference and Julie’s away all week because she’s had an operation.

5. Ta có thể sử dụng for để nói về mục đích của điều gì đó, hoặc để giải thích vì sao chúng ta làm điều gì đó.

This knife is used for cutting steak. ~ Are we having steak for dinner? That’s expensive! ~ Well, Claire’s won a prize for poetry at school, so we’re having steak for dinner to celebrate.

FRANK: I’ve just completed my passport application.

JIMMY: I thought you had a passport. Why do you want a new one?
