1. Một vài thí dụ về câu ta có thể giản lược chữ, nhưng nghĩa vẫn rõ:

2. Khi sử dụng and, but, và or để kết nối các cụm từ hoặc các mệnh đề, ta thường giản lược những chữ không cần thiết:

This machine washes the apples and it packs them.

à This machine washes the apples and packs them.

I’ve cleaned the sitting room and I’ve cleaned my bed room.

à I’ve cleaned the sitting room and my bedroom.

Jack seemed nervous but he seemed excited.

3. Ta có thể sử dụng trợ động từ thay vì lặp lại cách nói dài hơn:

Amy couldn’t speak French a year ago, but now she can.

(= She can speak French)

I thought Tim would get good marks, and he did.

(= he got good marks)

Who knows the way? ~ I do.

Khi sử dụng trợ động từ theo cách này, ta không được sử dụng hình thức tắt:

Lucy won’t help you but I will. (không nói I’ll)

Dan’s not coming but Sara is. (không nói Sara’s)

4. Với động từ thường đi theo bằng động từ nguyên mẫu, ta có thể nói to thay cho một cụm từ đầy đủ:

Why don’t you talk to him? ~ Because I don’t want to.

Dave doesn’t smoke now but he used to.

We’d like to get married but we can’t afford to.

Các động từ tiêu biểu gồm: have (got), mean, plan, intend, would like

Ta thường lược bỏ chữ shop, house, flat v.v. . . trong cách nói:

I’ve got to go to the greengrocer’s / doctor’s.

We’re having lunch at my brother’s today.

Thực hành văn phạm

1. Trong chuyện trò, ta có thể lược bỏ chữ khi ai cũng hiểu ta muốn nói gì:

Can we go to the cimema, Mum? ~ We can if you want to.

2. Trong văn viết trang trọng, ta lược bỏ chữ để làm cho những gì ta nói trở nên súc tích, ngắn gọn hơn (chỉ đưa ra thông tin quan trọng và cần thiết):

If we are asked to provide further information, we will.

Donna and Claire are work colleagues. They are using an instant messaging service to arrange a meeting. Cross out the words that can be left out without changing the meaning.

DM Claire – we need to arrange a time and to arrange a place (0) for tomorrow’s meeting.

DM Free from 11 to 12 (1).

CP I’m busy till 11.30 – I’ve got an appointment at the doctor’s surgery (2).

B. Film review

Here is a recent film review. Rewrite the underlined phrases in the shortest way possible.

To Them That Have is Debreuil’s third feature film and (0) it is his best movie yet. Critics, including myself, admired his early promise but (1) we wondered if he would produce a film worthy of that promise, and now (2) he has produced a film worthy of that promise.
