Các Hình Thức Rút Gọn Mệnh Đề Quan Hệ Trong Tiếng Anh

5. Trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định với be, ta có thể giản lược who, which hoặc that + be. Who, which hoặc that có thể ám chỉ đến chủ từ, túc từ hoặc túc từ gián tiếp.

SUBJECT

The man who is in the corner waved at me.

-> The man in the corner waved at me.

OBJECT

I watched the man who was in the corner.

-> I watched the man in the corner.

INDIRECT OBJECT

I gave a cake to the man who was in the corner.

-> I gave a cake to the man in the corner.

6. Khi be là trợ động từ trong thì tiếp diễn, ta có thể giản lược who, which hoặc that + be:

I like the woman who is talking to Peter.

-> I like the woman talking to Peter.

7. Khi be là trợ động từ trong thụ động cách (passive voice), ta có thể giản lược who, which hoặc that + be:

I spoke to the man who is known as Lucky Leslie.

-> I spoke to the man known as Lucky Leslie.

Ta thường sử dụng one thay vì lặp lại danh từ:

Which car do you mean? ~ The car which is in front of mine.

-> The car in front of mine.

-> The one in front of mine.

Thực hành văn phạm

Trong văn nói, ta thường giản lược các mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (defining relative clauses), và sử dụng động từ dạng –ing (-ing form) hoặc quá khứ phân từ (past participle). Ta cũng có thể giải thích ta đang nói đến người nào hoặc vật nào, nhưng thường chỉ giản lược chữ khi nghĩa đã rõ ràng:

Can you see that man?

~ Which man?

~ The one standing at the top of the ladder over there.
